When the time came to ditch the diaper bag, I jumped for joy. I never liked toting around a huge bag, but was still surprised that even though I now have a five-year-old, we still cart around a lot of stuff! Now that we are involved in school and sports, it turns out I still need a decent bag that’s both functional and stylish. Just as we signed up for the upcoming summer swim team (that requires tons of swim accessories!), one of my favorite companies released a baby line- Baby by Thirty One!

Of course, your “diaper bag” doesn’t have to be a bag designed specifically for that purpose—something else may better match your personal style and have a use after your kids are out of diapers. Parents we know have used bags ranging from this lightweight Patagonia travel tote (a pick in our tote bags guide), to a simple cloth grocery bag, to a waxed canvas farmer’s market bag, to a Baggu drawstring backpack or shoulder bag (our top tote bag pick), to a many-pocketed canvas shoulder bag sold on Etsy, to an expensive Tom Bihn backpack that has a pocket layout that works well for baby supplies (wipes in the bottom, changing pad in the main compartment, bottles in the side pockets). “Because of the removable-laptop-sleeve design, I could use the same backpack with and without the kids,” the Tom Bihn-loving dad told us. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/8e/34/d5/8e34d5ddf1f6a11f8ee524406a8810fe--very-clever-flashlight.jpg
We’re not the first to give the Skip Hop Duo high marks: Baby Bargains selected it as the best diaper bag of 2017, BabyList called it one of its best picks of 2017, and Meg Collins of Lucie’s List named it among her favorites. It is among the most popular diaper bags on Amazon, averaging just over 4.5 stars (out of five) across more than 1,000 reviews as of summer 2017. Although few would mistake it for some of the $200-and-up diaper bag options out there, its style is sophisticated for what it is. One Wirecutter staffer seeing it for the first time said it looked most similar to our upgrade pick, “with fewer bells and whistles”—a strong endorsement considering she didn’t yet know that this cost about a third of the price of the other bag. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/aa/61/ec/aa61ec0365d6984d55f32cb9b70143cf--makeup-foundation-younique.jpg
Another thing that sets it apart is a high-end look and feel as well as some additional features that are nice but not essential—there’s a set of luggage-style feet that keep the bag up off a dirty surface (a feature no other pick has). There’s a unique velvet pocket that protects your sunglasses, a keyring so you can find your keys in a snap, and two open insulated pockets that are nice for bottles (but honestly they were not amazing insulators). Plus, with details such as gold metal hardware, we thought the B.F.F. looked the most fashion-forward out of our top picks. The construction feels really robust, although you do see some occasional complaints of things breaking that really shouldn’t. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/fc/72/65/fc72654e676fb28086366513b0ad4169.jpg
Once you finally get out the door, the real adventure begins! Why not be ready for anything by turning your vehicle into a mobile baby station? (We know – between the car seat, stroller, sun shades, backseat mirror and kid-friendly tunes, it kind of is already.) Pack up a structured bin or expandable caddy to keep in your center console or between the seats.
I loved the SkipHop when we had two kids, but it didn’t hold up well and I decided a back pack was a must. As my younger boys grew, I’d take one of their Pottery Barn backpacks to amusement parks, MLB games, the zoo, etc. They worked great for these trips but I wasn’t a fan of the robots or Spider-Man. For baby number 3, I got a Vera Bradley backpack that I love. The laptop compartment is perfect for a changing pad, diapers, and wipes. The rest of the bag has a good amount of pockets. Also because it’s not technically a diaper bag, I will continue using it as needed after we are out of the baby stage.
My favorite diaper bag was my Petunia Picklebottom boxy backpack purchased for a steal off of Craigslist. It wiped up easily, and washed up in nearly perfect condition after our years of use and I regifted it to a friend who ended up in the hospital very early in her pregnancy and didn’t have a chance to go out shopping for one. She loved it too. It’s probably still out there toting around sippy cups. The multiple strap options were amazing. It was a backpack/crossbody/shoulder bag depending on your needs in the moment and the shoulder strap had such a wide range of lengths it hung over any stroller and even standard size shopping cart handles. I wouldn’t pay for a new one, but a nice used laminated “boxy backpack” is well worth the money in my opinion. I believe they now have a larger size backpack option too.
This is our highest-ranking convertible diaper bag, and we love the style and functionality of this versatile and relatively unisex diaper bag system. The bag converts from a regular over-the-shoulder diaper bag, to a messenger bag, and to a super comfortable backpack with soft shoulder pads. So just when your arm or shoulder is getting sore, you can untuck the backpack straps from the side pocket, and off you go, in style and comfort. But it's not just versatile. This diaper bag is also super functional. It has outside and inside pockets, 3M baby bottle insulator pockets, and clever see-through plastic pockets inside so you can see what you're looking for before you go searching. It's relatively small, but we found it big enough for one baby, and the fact that you can open the main compartment nice and wide really helps you fit all your things in (and prevents you from randomly searching for things). But it does have a few drawbacks, given its high price (like $170). For this price, we would expect a bit higher quality on the fabrics and zippers. They're good, but not quite on par with the heavier duty zippers of a SOHO bag, or the easy-clean fabrics of a SkipHop bag. So while it's on our list of best diaper bags, and we think it's worthy of inclusion, these drawbacks will keep it a bit lower in our reviews and ratings. Interested? Seemingly the most common complaint about this bag is that the main zippered compartment is deep, narrow, and simply not big enough. On the plus side, the narrow compartment means that the Skip Hop Duo Signature isn’t too bulky, as many other diaper bags bags we tested were. But it also means that you may end up stacking your stuff in the main compartment, and not having much room for extras. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/03/c1/d6/03c1d64be2b5ae586820c3ac8e9bdc7c--makeup-tutorials-makeup-tips.jpg
"Our study shows that bearded men harbour significantly higher burden of microbes and more human-pathogenic strains than dogs," the authors wrote, noting that when MRI scanners are used for both dogs and humans, they're cleaned very well after veterinary use, and actually have a "lower bacterial load compared with scanners used exclusively for humans." https://i.pinimg.com/236x/6d/02/01/6d0201521fa675f41b6072ce8a42dcf2--glitter-eye-makeup-brown-eyes-makeup.jpg
The Jeep Diaper Backpack was roomy, and had plenty of pockets for organization, including a zippered, insulated pocket for a bottle on the side of the bag. But it did not have an open pocket for a bottle, which meant that anytime we needed a drink, we had to remove the backpack from our shoulders and unzip one of the pockets. We ran into the same problem with the Bag Nation Diaper Backpack. Almost identical in design to the Jeep Diaper Bag, the Bag Nation Diaper Backpack also did not have any open pockets, though it did have an insulated pocket for a bottle on the side.

So why buy an actual diaper bag? They’re thoughtfully designed with right-size pockets for essential baby gear, and made with tough material that’s easy to clean—inevitably, milk or juice will spill inside, and crushed crackers will find their way into crevices. Mine has been tossed around in my car, dumped on park benches and dragged across wet grass. I once accidentally left a banana peel in it for a few days. “The diaper bag is for the diapering years,” said Meg Collins, founder of Lucie’s List, a blog that recommends essential baby products for new parents. “It’s meant to keep you organized and sane. You have go-to pockets for your keys, diapers and wipes. You don’t have to think or fumble.” That just may help you escape the house a little more quickly. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/4b/dc/72/4bdc723ab276c2609294b82b894d28f4--pink-lipstick-makeup-hot-pink-lipsticks.jpg

At the top of the bag, a discreet zippered pocket securely holds your smartphone and keys. Another, much larger zippered pocket that runs across the front of the bag can fit a book or e-reader, large wallet, and other miscellaneous items. Inside the main zippered compartment are two elastic pockets for diapers and wipes, along with two narrow, tiny pockets that could hold pens and pencils for you or an older child (but not much more).
There are elastic holders on one of the sides for two water bottles or baby bottles, plus lots of pockets to organize everything.  I really like that there is a thermal lined pocket on the inside of the tote for a sandwich or some cheese sticks.  It is big enough to hold lunch for one or snacks for 4.  It really makes this bag an all-in-one option so you do not need to take a lunch bag or cooler unless you need more than a snack or single lunch.  The middle compartment has a zipper closure that I keep my personal items in like my wallet.  I like that I can zip it up and know it is secure but then the compartments on either side are open for easy access to wipes, or toys that I may need to grab quickly.

The Skip Hop Duo Signature, at 1¾ pounds, was one of the more lightweight bags we tested, yet it felt sturdy and durable despite being shoved, tossed, and dragged around at the beach, on a 5-hour plane ride, and to the pediatrician’s office. Like the better bags we considered, it can be carried multiple ways: An adjustable, padded strap is comfortable to carry on a shoulder, and its tote handles make it easy to set down on a floor (like the best bags we saw, it stands upright). The secret to its superior accessibility is a perfect combination of open and zippered pockets—it’s the most intuitive and effortless bag we saw for stowing and retrieving water bottles and toys at a moment’s notice, it can keep valuables secure, and it’s clear what goes where in the bag. A wipeable polyester interior is straightforward to clean; within five minutes we removed all evidence of spilled milk and crushed Cheerios left in the bag for 24 hours. With a strong rating across more than 1,000 Amazon user reviews, it’s extremely popular, and at its current price of about $50 to $60, it’s one of the most affordable bags we tested—plus, it has better overall features than other competitors we tested in its price range.

Diaper bags are specifically designed to schlep all the things you need for your baby or toddler. Chances are, your little angel will surprise you with the biggest, smelliest, most disgusting blowout when you are miles away from home. Diaper bags generally come equipped with a changing pad, and have room to hold diapers, wipes, hand sanitizer and creams, a change of clothing or two, snacks, and a smartphone and a wallet, often in a series of pockets designed with specific items in mind. Some also have external, sometimes insulated, pockets for milk and/or water bottles, and designated straps to hook the bag onto your stroller. (Note: Though the JPMA and Consumer Reports advise against hanging a bag on a stroller because of the tip risk, most diaper bag makers—and parents—ignore this warning). https://i.pinimg.com/236x/ac/72/c9/ac72c9d1247bd5044d8abc448527cd40--lularoe-party-thirty-one-party.jpg
The solid colors of the Take Two Diaper Bag also make it a cinch to personalize – just choose your favorite thread color and font! Here’s a personalization tip: Your last name or initial work just as well as baby’s name on your diaper bag! The neutral colors also make it the perfect canvas for Icon-Its, or choose a new Floral Letter or Blackboard Initial monogram. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/cd/49/ee/cd49ee5977aaf293fde505bf645262ba--away-we-go-thirty-one.jpg
From the moment we opened the box, we fell in love with this top-rated Skip Hop diaper bag! It perfectly demonstrates the intersection between style and functionality. For moms with style, it uses a classy New York style colors and black stripe pattern, with light brown leather accents. We loved the look of this tote diaper bag style. But we were even more impressed by the functionality. This baby diaper bag gets things done. It is big, well-made, and has a ton of pockets (11 to be exact). For pockets, let's start on the outside: it has insulated side pockets that were big enough to fit even the widest baby bottles and keep stored at a nicely controlled temperature. Above those on the sides are some small pockets that were very easily accessible and perfect spot for keeping pacifiers. On the front, it has zippered pockets, which we thought were great for mom's personal stuff: car keys, a small wallet, or cell phone. The inside is vast and well-lined for durability and easy cleaning. It has a huge center space, which is perfect for diapers, wipes, changing pads (it comes with a great one!), and toys. A clever divider is put in between the outside handles and the main inside space, which provides even more storage space. These were great for more upright things that you want to slide up & out quickly like diaper cream, sunscreen, and lotion. Overall, we absolutely loved this bag, and it performed very well in our testing for durability, and we think it is very deserving of this spot on our diaper bag list! Cons? A bit pricey, usually around $75. Highly recommended! Interested? The Land series has a generous insulated front zippered pocket to hold three slim bottles, and an exterior wipes pocket. In the back, it has an additional large zippered pocket, a wet pocket, and a zippered tech pocket. Inside, it has several elasticized pockets and a zippered interior pocket for organizing bottles, creams and the like, and plenty of space in the cavity for clothes and diapers. https://i.pinimg.com/236x/25/24/e5/2524e5aea3fa8bca011bf2b95a57dff6--face-makeup-hair-and-makeup.jpg
